Our Story
Nestled in the heart of the village of Stowupland, the building that houses The Crown, Stowupland has origins reaching back to the 14th century. What started as a simple dwelling gradually evolved into a traditional country inn, serving the local community and travellers alike. By the mid-18th century it was recorded as the “Crown Inn” under tenancy of the manor of Thorney Hall, showing its early function as a public house.
Over the centuries, The Crown has seen numerous changes in ownership, usage and refurbishment. In 1805 the site was sold by brewer William Aldrich to John Cobbold. In the 20th century it retained its historic charm, with its thatched roof and rustic character still evident. Notably, in 1966 the roof required re-thatching, showing the attention given to preserving the building’s traditional fabric.

- Present
Then, in 2014 the building was acquired by Robert and Emily Shelley, who undertook a major restoration using local trades-people and a sensitive approach, keeping the 14th-century essence alive while adapting the venue for modern hospitality.
The Kitchen
Our kitchen is led by Head Chef Dan Jones (and the talented sous-team), who bring a true passion for Suffolk-sourced ingredients and seasonal cooking. Drawing inspiration from local farms and the rhythms of the countryside, the team transforms fresh produce into dishes full of heart and flavour. From classic pub favourites to our signature wood-fired pizzas, every plate is prepared with care, creativity, and a warm welcome.
On Sundays, we serve up a traditional roast – tender meats, golden potatoes, and all the trimmings – the perfect way to finish the week with friends, family, and a well-earned pint.
Where Families Gather
At The Crown, we believe good food and good company are for everyone. Ours is a place where families come together — little ones giggling in the garden, grandparents sharing stories and friends catching up over a pint. With generous portions, a laid-back atmosphere, and space for all ages (including the family dog), we’re proud to be the kind of pub that feels like home to everyone who walks through the door.
